President's Newsletter - December 2017

SVLL Members -

We hope you are having a happy and festive holiday season. As the weather turns colder, baseball is probably the last thing on your mind, but it's time to start preparing for the 2018 Little League Season. The Board of Directors is busy preparing for our league's second season, which we believe will be even better than our inaugural season. There are a few items we wanted to share with you as we head into the New Year.

Registration --

We opened registration for the 2018 season back in November, but we want to make sure this message gets out. You will qualify for an early-bird discount if you register before January 10th. All children who wish to participate in the Majors or Minors division (typically 9 thru 12 year olds), must participate in our Tryout / Player Evaluation event and you MUST be registered with the league prior to that event. We will not support registration on the day of Tryouts / Player Evaluations, so please don't hesitate to sign up.

Registrations are handled online here: http://sunnyvalelittleleague.com/gen/registration.htm

Bat Standards --

Little League Baseball has mandated new bat standards for the 2018 season, which will go into effect on January 1, 2018. LLB has made several resources available online to address questions regarding this standard here:

http://www.littleleague.org/learn/equipment/baseballbatinfo/USA-Baseball-Bat-Standard-FAQs.htm

It's important to call out that all umpires will be instructed to look for a new USA Baseball stamp on the bat itself. As a rule of thumb, you should not bat any bat that does not have this stamp printed on the bat itself. We strongly advise against purchasing bats that have a USA decal. Look for actual printing on the bat. More information is available on our web site at:

http://sunnyvalelittleleague.com/news/2017/17-1214-01.htm

Here are some examples of what to look for:

and

Here is an example of a decal which has been affixed to the outer wrapper of a bat. Once that bat is unwrapped, that decal would no longer be affixed to the bat and therefore would NOT be eligible for use in our league:

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact any Board Member for more information.

Tryouts / Player Evaluations --

We received lots of feedback on the format of last year's Player Evaluations, so we will be modifying them for the 2018 season. Tryouts / Player Evaluations will take place in January, but we will be offering multiple sessions per division.

ALL SESSIONS WILL BE HELD AT CUPERTINO MIDDLE SCHOOL.

ALL PLAYERS WHO ARE TRYING OUT MUST SIGN UP FOR ONE OF THE TRYOUT SESSIONS HERE:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1fWANgnFkMnI2pd-AHQNh2y6pargQfiYtmB5QobP07Bg/edit?usp=drivesdk

Majors Tryouts / Player Evaluations: Players who will be playing in the Majors Division (typically 11 and 12 year-olds) will have two tryout sessions:

Session #1: Saturday, January 20th from 9:00am to 11:00am

Session #2: Sunday, January 21st from 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Minors Tryouts / Player Evaluations: Players who will be playing in the Minors Division (typically 9 and 10 year-olds) will have two tryout sessions:

Session #1: Saturday, January 20th from 12:00pm to 2:00pm

Session #2: Sunday, January 21st from 11:00am to 1:00pm

We will NOT be holding Player Evaluations for Farm level players this season. We will be offering both a Farm Player Clinic and Farm Manager Clinic on March 3rd.

For more information, see: http://sunnyvalelittleleague.com/gen/tryouts.htm

Fundraiser Dates --

It's never too soon to start collecting funds to help us reduce the overall cost of playing in Sunnyvale Little League. We try to help offset fees by holding fundraisers throughout the year.

1) We will be holding our first fundraiser of the year at Chipotle in conjunction with Tryouts on Sunday, January 21st at Chipotle, 20688 Homestead Road (by the new Safeway) between 4:00pm and 8:00pm. 50% of proceeds will be donated back to our league. Flyers will be available at Tryouts and on our website. Be sure to bring the flyer with you so that our league receives credit.

2) We will also be holding a Sunnyvale Little League Shop Event at the Dick's Sporting Goods at 125 E. El Camino Real in Sunnyvale on Saturday March 3rd and Sunday March 4th. A percentage of most purchases will be donated back to SVLL. We will provide a discount code as we get closer to that event, but we wanted to make you all aware in the event you are planning on making any baseball equipment purchases for the upcoming season.

We hope to see you all there.

Have a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy New Year,
